Changemakers Leadership Course (Online)

At OELC/CASO, our 2020 program offerings are all about the CARE Strategy: Community Action Ripple Effect Strategy (CARES). This fall’s offerings will focus on the development of global minded, local focused social justice guardians as agents of change in communities across Ontario.

Changemakers Leadership will set out to engage you with a community of like-minded youth from across the province. Designed to connect you with our OELC community, through a common area of interest, participants will tackle timely topic matters, activities and sessions to help spread positivity, raise self-awareness and inspire action. Each of the three-week modules will be facilitated and led by experts, researchers, educators and leaders on the topic. E-Cabins are led by our skilled Teacher Facilitators and Youth Facilitators.

Course Content

Each week, the course includes 3 hours of synchronous (live), asynchronous (at home) and self-directed learning and participation.

Modules - The 12 week Changemakers Leadership Course is made up of a series of three-week modules. The four topics are:

  1. Anti-Racism in Action
  2. Climate Change in the Arctic
  3. Reconciliation, ReconciliACTION and Me
  4. Food Security and Sustainability

Keynote sessions for each module will take place Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM and are typically 60-90 minutes long.

To get the most out of the modules, we recommend leaders log on to keynote sessions Wednesday evenings and participate in synchronous live learning. However, all module keynote sessions are recorded and recordings will be made available weekly for asynchronous at home learning to leaders by 12 Noon on Thursdays.

E-Cabins - Electronic cabins will provide an opportunity, for those that wish to join a group of leaders from across the province, for discussion, reflection, connection and community once a week for 12-weeks. Weekly discussion questions are an extension of the Keynote sessions. To get the most out of e-Cabins make sure to attend the weekly module keynote prior to the E-Cabin meeting.

E-Cabins require leaders to participate in a weekly small group synchronous live session facilitated by an OELC/CASO staff and volunteers. Cabin meetings are typically 60-90 minutes long.

Leaders can choose from the following e-Cabin timeslots:

  • Wednesday - 8:00-9:00 PM (30 mins after the Keynote)
  • Thursday - 6:30-7:30 PM
  • Thursday - 8:00-9:00 PM

Self-directed Inquiry - Each week the module keynote speaker will present leaders with a self-directed inquiry task for leaders to follow their curiosity and explore the module topic further. The more questions you ask, the more curious you are, the more you get out of the course.

Agents of Change

This course is designed specifically with youth taking action as agents of change as the learning outcome.

If you are someone that is: in Grade 6-12 and you care deeply about social justice issues with the desire to make a difference then this course is designed for you. If you are a young person who is curious about topics of people, environment, land, sustainability, equity and culture then this course is designed for you. If you are a young person who wants to build connections with like-minded young people who are passionate and care deeply about the world we live in then this course is designed for you. If you’re a young person and believe that you have what it takes to make a difference in your community and in the world then this course is designed for you.

Each module we will explore the topic using the “What? So What? Now What?” framework. Experts are invited to join our community, share knowledge and facilitate small group discussions. Consolidation of learning and reflections will take place in e-Cabins. Self-guided inquiry allows for in-depth exploration of individual curiosities and questions. Changemakers Leadership challenges youth across Ontario to take local actions that make a global impact.
